On this World Day for Decent Work, IOHSAD reiterates its support for the House resolution and its call for an investigation, and urges Congress and the concerned government agencies to ensure meaningful accountability, stronger enforcement, and greater protection for waste workers and affected communities.
Accountability must extend beyond administrative fines. Justice requires that workplace tragedies not be repeated, OSH systems be strengthened, and those responsible be held fully accountable. The current OSH Law should be amended to make this possible.
“Profit should never come before a worker's right to come home alive. HB 5221 must be passed immediately — stricter fines and imprisonment for neglectful companies. Right now, the penalty for letting your workers die is cheaper than fixing a fire exit,” said De Leon.
